Pioneer chemical industries awards $7.5M in award

NEW YORK — The National Institute of Standards and Technology announced today that it has awarded $7 million to the National Center for Atmospheric Research for a research and development project to study and evaluate how carbon dioxide is emitted from the chemical industry.

The NIST Research and Development Program is dedicated to developing solutions for the mitigation of climate change and for the detection, attribution, and mitigation of human-induced climate change.

The program, funded by the National Science Foundation, is administered by the U.S. Office of Science.

The research project will focus on the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide on the formation of clouds and how they affect cloud formation and cloud cover in different regions of the world.

This work is the result of NIST’s multiyear project to evaluate the impacts of atmospheric CO2 on clouds.NIST also announced today a new $2.5 million grant to NIST and the American Chemical Society to develop a study of the effects on the atmosphere of the use of CO2-emitting vehicles in the U of M’s Center for Aerospace Research, which has been operating for nearly 40 years.

This study will provide valuable data on how these emissions affect the cloud formation process, and on the role of the atmospheric CO 2 in determining cloud formation.

This work is part of the NIST-USDA-CASPAR Climate Science and Engineering Partnership (CSEGP) initiative.

The CSEGP seeks to understand how CO2 is affecting the climate system through its effect on the composition and structure of the atmosphere, and how these changes influence cloud formation, and its effect in determining precipitation.

The National Institute on Atmospheric Research (NIAAS), an interdisciplinary research and technological agency, is a part of NIAAS.
